…Solitude…
On top of a small bluff, the air was humid; suffocated of any breeze that might have attempted to rise. On top of the bluff was a brilliant piebald mare, standing erect with her young offspring. Jade stood square with her tipped ears pointed forward. She twitched her skin, shoeing away flies that gathered on her coat. Little Marengo shook his tiny head and bucked, scattering the biting insects.
Lifting her head to the wind, Jade opened her upper lift, tasting the air and detecting the nearest water hole. Marengo nudged her, impatient to be moving again so that the flies didn't eat him alive. Jade gently pressed her body against her foal's, telling him to be patient. With a snort, the young chestnut was forced to oblige.
Finally, a faint breeze carried the scent of water, and Jade understood it immediately. Picking up a trot going down the hill, Jade picked up her feet so that she didn’t stumble down the slope. Marengo cantered down after her, but soon lost his balance and tripped halfway down. The chestnut passed up his mother on a race to the bottom, struggling to stay upright. Once Marengo reached level ground, he twitched his plumy tail with the consistency of a metronome, waiting for his mother to rejoin him.
Jade snorted at her careless son, but continued to trot towards the promise of water. The piebald’s stride was long and relaxed, her neck stretched out as she had been taught from her years on the ranch. Her son cantered to keep up with her, commanding his gangly legs to cooperate. The distance between the two horses and the lake soon evaporated, and Jade whickered in delight when she set eyes on the cool water. Trotting into the clear water had never felt so wonderful, and Marengo only hesitated a moment or two before plunging in after his dam. Jade waded until the water covered her back, but seeing Marengo trying to follow her, she took pity on him and returned to the shallower region. Marengo snorted as he swam up to his mother, and was grateful for the firm ground to stand on once the water became shallow again. Refreshing water came up to his chest, and for his mother up to her legs. Jade nibbled at the chestnut’s furry mane, grooming him as his eyes slowly drifted closed. All was quiet. It was only when the silence became unnatural that Jade was alerted. Flitting her ears back and forth, she looked around for what might be watching them, but with no wind she could hardly smell a thing. Pinning her ears back, she opened up her mouth to release a shrill whinny. Marengo shied away in fright, having been awakened, but soon retreated back to his mother, the water bubbling around his belly as he trotted back to her. The presence of another reeked throughout the air…
